What exactly is Hang Gliding?
According to Webster's New World Dictionary, Second College Edition (1984), "hang gliding" is an Americanism that means "the sport of gliding through the air while hanging suspended by a harness from a large type of kite (hang glider)."
That would explain why Americans spell it Hang Gliding, while in other nations it tends to be spelled Hangliding. Other spelling we've seen include Hanggliding, Hand Gliding and Handgliding, which we believe to be incorrect. Do you spell it differently? Let us know.
Where
do we fly?
Our home site is the Mt. Tamalpais State Park, just ten miles
north of San Francisco.
When do we fly?
We fly seven days a week, weather permitting. Typically between
10:30 am and 5:00 pm.
Can a person with no experience fly on the first day?
With the help of our certified instructors, anyone can fly with
only ten minutes of instruction on the ground. The rest of the lesson
is conducted in flight, from two thousand feet, side by side with
some of the most experienced hang gliding instructors in the world.
Is it dangerous?
Like the rest of life, hang gliding is not without danger. We have
maintained our perfect safety record using extreme caution, attention
to detail, and some of the best pilots around. All of our instructors
have between 11 and 32 years of experience.
How
long is the flight?
We fly from a 2000 foot mountain, for a distance of 2 miles out
to the north end of Stinson Beach, one of the most popular beaches
in the San Francisco Bay area. The flight can last anywhere from
10-30 minutes, depending on the weather.
Do I need to make a reservation in advance?
We do tend to book up several weeks in advance, particularly
on the weekends, but if your decision is a spontaneous one we will try
to accommodate you.
Is there an age limit?
We have taken people between 8 and 83 years of age.
Can I get pictures of my flight?
When available (*), we will attach a camera with a wide angle lens
to the glider. This captures you, the glider, and the view. At the
end of your flight, your instructor will give you the exposed roll
of film. (* Due to camera maintenance and other issues, the camera
is not always available, and photos are never guaranteed. Ask your
instructor about the camera, the day before your flight.)
What should I wear?
Be sure to wear rubber-soled shoes, such as tennis shoes, hiking
shoes or running shoes. No sandals or high heels, please. Also,
we suggest bringing layers, as it can be hard to predict if it will
be hot or cold.
Is it scary?
Most people find that, in retrospect, the scary part is thinking
about doing it. But, once you are up there flying like the eagles,
it is one of the most peaceful and serene things a person can do!
Can you provide transportation?
We can provide transportation to those staying in Marin county or
some of the nearby cities. This must be arranged in advance.
